Employees from SBB CFF FFS, ÖBB, Deutsche Bahn and the OpenRail Association came together in Bern for the Hack4Rail hackathon to tackle shared challenges in the railway sector with open solutions.
We (SBB, DB and the Flatland Association) contributed a joint challenge from the AI4REALNET Project. The focus was on human and AI collaboration in railway operations, especially in the areas of dispatching and rescheduling. For such systems to be successful, they must be trustworthy and explainable to the humans using them.

Our team created a prototype of an interactive timetable graph (Marey diagram) with automatically generated route variants and an integrated option (LLM) to ask the system questions about the proposed solutions. The prototype is based on the open source environment Flatland. We plan to use this newly developed approach to support further exploration and learning.

Many thanks to our fantastic and highly motivated team, to the many participants, to the organizers and to the jury for such an amazing hackathon.
